Beaufort West, established in 1818, is the oldest town in the Central Karoo region of South Africa. It was founded on the farm Hooyvlakte and named after Lord Charles Somerset's father, the Duke of Beaufort. The town is known for its Karoo architecture, including the first town hall in the country and the Christ Church Anglican Church. It also holds historical significance as the birthplace of Professor Christiaan Barnard, who performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant.
