Jerez Cathedral

This beautiful fortress has been occupied by Phoenicians and the Moors, for whom it provided protection on the border to Moorish Spain. Dating from the 12th century, its ornate details are stunning. Snap a shot of the Puerta de la Ciudad entrance, the soaring ceilings of the Mezquita mosque and the intricate tiling of the Arabic baths. The elaborate complex also contains a palace, towers and a mill.

    Bit expensive but you do get an audio guide.

    Bit expensive but you do get an audio guide. OK if you understand religious iconography and can appreciate the historical and monetary value of paintings, relics, etc but we found it difficult to follow as we prefer the honesty of a less ostentatious church. Climb the tower for views over the city, although you don't get to go right to the very top, so not as spectacular as it would be if you could.

    This is a beautiful cathedral.

    This is a beautiful cathedral. But its history is interesting in that it was once captured and used as a mosque for many years by the Moorish Army until the Christian Armies recaptured Jerez in the 1490s.
