- From US$146.90 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very good - What previous guests thought, 411 reviewsAra Ambigua handles a lot of coaches pausing for a day or two en route to other parts of CR, so lots of tourists around even in low/shoulder season. However, quite a lot of Costa Ricans there as well, which speaks well. After 10 days on the road, staying in EcoLodges of varying quality, I expected more of the same but was delighted by the high standard of Ara Ambigua. They clearly prioritise keeping the jungle at bay, and the staff were well-trained and helpful. I came back late one night to find the front gates locked, and managed to sneak in by another route. The night watchman and his large dog almost gave me a heart attack as they came on me out of the dark; but were very kind once they knew I was a guest, and helped me through the dark to my room! Front desk and other staff were also very helpful and kind. Swimming pools clean, well-maintained, respecable wine list (they store their wines in a climate-controlled room). Room was clean, a good size, well air-conditioned and with a good shower.Guest review byGuyUnited Kingdom
- From US$178.99 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 463 reviewsWe knew Poas Volcano Lodge would be a nice place, but it turned out to be much nicer than we expected. The entrance as you drive through the dairy farm is lovely, and the hotel's grounds are much bigger than I thought. We stayed in the main building and found the style and the architecture very nice, incredibly spacious, very well kept. There are multiple lounge areas - the photos don't do them justice. The rooms are large, the bed really comfortable, and the view over the volcano is beautiful. We had dinner on site which was ok - like a nice homely meal - and then enjoyed a few glasses of wine by the fire on one of their many couches. Overall, we were quite surprised and delighted by how lovely our stay was. If you're looking for a place that's cute, cozy, but of a high standard then this is it.Guest review bySarahMexico
- From US$59.33 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 142 reviewsA very special and incredible place to visit. You will need a good car to get there, but you will not be disappointed. It is a huge tree house stretching through the native forest as it is built into the forest. Great for bird watchers and frog spotters. Great hikes between waterfalls and around local fields and villages. Very caring staff will book local tours for you and will look after you with a high level of hospitality. The rooms are very big, the bed and mattress are impressive and the mosquito net is well built and spacious! We are very grateful!Guest review byVasilijsUnited Kingdom
- From US$146.90 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 116 reviewsSleeping in the « domo » (the yurt) was truly magical. we could thus hear nature better. The bedroom and bathroom area were spacious, comfortable and very clean. The garden and the property are really gorgeous We took advantage of it to take the 4km walk in the forest path into the property. The view from the restaurant is incredible for breakfast. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. Our guests was super kind and helpful!Guest review byDianeBelgium
- From US$322.05 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 188 reviewsThis place was amazing. The workers were very friendly and attentive, and the resort itself is beautiful. They also do an amazing job with the landscaping, so you feel like you’re in the middle of the jungle. The food was great and we loved the coffee hour and banana bread! We also did the coffee farm tour, which was amazing! The tour guide was so knowledgeable and talked a lot about their sustainable farming practices.Guest review byCarlyGermany
- From US$124.30 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 898 reviewsThis felt like a very special place. Everyone has their own cabin with fire place should you need to warm up. There’s a long walk you can do through the jungle from the hotel which was really nice. The staff were really helpful when it came to getting taxis around, but a lot easier here to have a car.Guest review byTamsinUnited Kingdom

Heredia is not my favorite place in Costa Rica.
Heredia is not my favorite place in Costa Rica. It is too busy, very confusing, and somewhat anxiety producing. I was there for eye surgery, so it was necessary this time, but it is not a place that I tend to frequent while in Costa Rica.Guest review byMunro - 10.0
Tirimbina is a magical place.
Tirimbina is a magical place. The grounds are nicely maintained. The trails are a bit tricky with concrete pavers which serve to give you a less muddy hiking experience, but they are not solid pavers, so just be aware that it’s not a smooth trail. The pavers end as you go deeper into the forest. We did an excellent coffee/chocolate making tour which we enjoyed immensely and also a night walk which was enjoyable. The restaurant is excellent! I am so glad we found this place!Guest review byCathyUnited States - 6.0

San Antonio itself is a great base to travel from, it is close to Airport and to Car rentals, there are Supermarkets nearby also if self catering, however it is a little too far from other central attentions if your intension is to stay in San Jose itself.Guest review byBenjaminUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Good roads but narrow as usual thru towns.
Good roads but narrow as usual thru towns. Different landscape with the farms and greenhouses and coffee plantations in rolling hills. Waterfalls. Loved the drifting clouds coming up the valleys in the evening. Cool evenings and warm days.Guest review byDonnaUnited States - 10.0
A slice of Tuscany in the lush green landscape.
A slice of Tuscany in the lush green landscape. Warm hospitality with cool breezes. Uniquely furnished and well equipped cottages. This is the paradise that is Finco Paraiso. The beautifully planned gardens were a treat to the eyes with fresh fruits and colorful flowers all around us. The breakfast was delicious with locally grown produce and rich and fragrant Costa Rican fresh ground coffee. The hosts were gracious and took the time to check on us when there was an unexpected black out( blackouts hardly ever happen there!). Everyone in our group wished to return with our partners and families as we just could not get enough of this jewel neat San Jose!Guest review byshyamUnited States - 8.0

I was there for a medical appointment, and only stayed two days. Having lived in Costa Rica for 6 years prior to this, I knew what to expect. I did, however, get to visit the Oxygen Mall for the first time, which is an amazing experience, and I did find a stuffed capybara to bring back for a friend.Guest review byMunro - 8.0

Cute little town near the airport.
Cute little town near the airport. Probably not a destination, but, if you have a night to kill before flying out, it's fine. Otherwise, there isn't anything I know of to draw visitors. Couple cute restaurants on the main street. Felt safe walking around after dark.Guest review byJPS-IIIUnited States - 8.0

We went to La Paz Waterfall gardens and it was an amazing place. You could easily spend an entire day there. Also the area is known for strawberries. We bought some from a roadside stand and they were delicious.Guest review byAlice - 10.0
