FAQs about hotels in Cantabria

The Colours of Nature

Bordered by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the small Spanish region of Cantabria is known for undulating, lush landscapes which sharply rise to sheer peaks in the south-western Picos de Europa mountain range.

The capital Santander is an important port and has a long promenade lining its sandy beach. The coastline to the west is packed with Cantabria hotels on the beach, some of which are in Comillas. This small town has a number of interesting buildings, including Gaudí’s Capricho. West in the Oyambre National Park is San Vincente de la Barquera. Take to the water for spectacular views of this village, its impressive bridge and the often snow-capped mountains beyond.

At Suances to the east, green cliffs plunge to the sea, while nearby medieval Santillana del Mar is the closest town to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Altamira cave paintings. Another medieval jewel is inland Potes whose cobbled streets and stone bridge over a stream are all in the shade of the Cantabrian mountains. In the east of the region, the rocks at Noja descend into crystal-clear waters, while Laredo’s curving bay ends in a hill that offers lovely views.

Whether you opt for one of the luxury hotels in Cantabria, an apartment or guest house, Booking.com has a great range of choice.

The accommodation was comfortable and the location was magnificent! We initially booked for two nights but extended to three. We caught the 8AM cable car then hiked the 14 km PR-PNPE24 trail back down to the hotel. Spectacular mountain scenery and beautiful autumn colours both close up and in the distance. The road from Potes to Fuente De was excellent.

Wasn’t expecting much for a 3star hotel, however Hotel Astus exceeded my expectations. The room had an amazing view to the sea, the room was sizeable with a nice shower room. The staff at the hotel (cleaners, reception, restaurant, cafeteria…) were extremely nice and polite. The hotel has a very nice restaurant as well which is a bonus.

It's a pretty medieval town, and I read that they control development, yet it still allows souvenir shops! It suffers in the way all pretty touristy places do: not many decent places to eat at a reasonable price. After one evening looking around we used the hotel as a base to travel to other places. I'd recommend a day visit at most.

We stayed here because we had a ferry to catch the following day it only took us 30minutes to drive from here to Santander. It was a beautiful town, beautiful views, houses and was a very quiet calm atmosphere. We were glad we picked and booked the hotel we stayed in. For bathing or surfing, San Vicente's Playa de Merón or nearby Playa de Oyambre are second to none. There are surf schools and one can also practice stand-up paddling, the large ria is ideal for this activity due to its calm and sheltered waters. If you like seafood there are many excellent restaurants, my favourites are : El Pescador, Las Redes, El Bodegon and Restaurant Agusto. In the high season parking is sometimes difficult but the town is compact and anywhere is easily reached on foot. Be sure to take a walk to the parish church where the view is splendid, not forgetting the castle. One should also visit nearby Comillas, Santillana del Mar, Altamira Cave and Cueva de Soplao. Potes and the Desfiladero de la Hermida are also a must. In nearby Colombres you can visit the "Museum de la Emigración" in the extraordinary "Palacio Quinta Guadalupe" built for Íñigo Noriega Laso, who made his fortune in Mexico.

It's not a touristy city, there's nothing to do, but they have some charm, and the festivities are quite nice, if you like busy streets full of people having vinos in the street, this is your place, otherwise it's a quite sad town I'm afraid.

Borja, Lorrena, Fernando and Diego (barman - not his real name) were fantastic staff members at Hotel Olimpo, so friendly, welcoming, helpful and fun. Food was amazing, hotel was immaculate with beautiful views. Amazing location, lovely walk across the beach to Noja. Isla is lovely with quirkly little shops and nice walks. I stayed here with my husband and teenage son and all three of us had a fabulous time and look forward to returning. Was great to kick back and slow down from a fast paced life back home to a relaxing break in Isla.
