It was great to spend the night in Giverny as the town became enchanting once the tourists had left. In the morning before the tourists arrived we were able to have a relaxed breakfast with locals and take a pleasent walk. Bernay is actually 'open' early evening and quite a buzz it has a good range of shops to walk around in the evening, lovely medieval buildings and quite a few restaurants and bars- still no Vegan / vegetarian options though which is a shame. Great chocolate shop Leonidas very friendly salesman even had some free chocolates first time we visited so this time we made a detour just to buy 4 boxes of chocolates for family. I have travelled through Pont Audemer dozens of times, and had quick stays there for a few hours. It is a lively place, very compact. I stayed a full night on 20th May 2024. and enjoyed having a few drinks in the main street. I can't remember the name of one bar that had many interesting objects hanging around: like a vintage motorbike and a seventy year old bicycle etc. Even a Gendarmes hat - like on 'Hello, Hello". The place fascinates me, with its old, historic buildings, and bars and eating places. The front door to the lobby was locked when we arrived in the afternoon. The lobby and desk area lights turned off every few seconds while we were check ing in. There were no other guests around and only 1-2 cars outside. The halls were dimly lit. There was no elevator and our room was on the 2nd floor. Impressive cathedral. However, too many youths hanging & cruising around town centre, making it feel a little uncomfortable. I’d bought a quiche Lorraine at the French crossing ( change of trains and when I arrived the hotel heated it up for me and put it on a plate with utensils so I could eat it in my room.
