Nice place to visit, lots to see and do. Though I would not visit during peak periods. In regards to visiting shops, nearby beaches, touristic attractions etc., there is a large variety. Yet, I would recommend visiting villages around Chania as well. For shops and food, best to dwell towards what the locals normally visit, mostly in the west and south parts, away from the main "tourist hubs". The town was buzzing and full of life. Some excellent restaurants (peskesi a stand out) Beaches were stunning especially when blessed with perfect summer weather. Fira is a great town full of varied shops and fantastic places to eat. It can be expensive so plan a little extra money for food though! There are plenty of things to do an see in the town and the public transport to other areas of the island are quite frequent and cheap. I traveled with my daughter & grandson from the US to London for a couple of days, then flew to Athens for a cruise leaving the next day. We made our way out of Athens to stay at the cruise port. We were exhausted but our time at the Seaside Hotel was a wonderful reprieve. It was charming, everyone so friendly and accommodating. I notified the hotel before 3pm on the arrival day that we could not arrive on the island & wished to cancel that night. Amazing Resort and extensive facilities on site. Staff are amazing. Also one of the best mani/pedi I ever had at the salon. Resort is about 30 minutes from airport, and would say for a 5* Europe resort, this lives up to expectation, but don't compare to a 5* Caribbean or Mexico Resort, so bear that in mind. We stayed at the Ocean view room which had spectacular views. The Rocky beach was just fantastic with the lounges and beds, and considering how busy this resort is, never noticed it and never felt overcrowded, and you never had to reserve benches or lounges by the beach or pool, there was more than enough to go round and even more spare. A la Carte restaurants that were amazing and my favourites are Umi (Sushi), Azzuro (Italian), Thalassa for breakfast & lunch, Poseidon. A real let down of the restaurants was Nami, only delicious items were the Starters. Kos was one of the most visitor friendly island. The large sidewalks and bike lanes were impressive. The post barriers along streets also great. the benches along Marina provided umbrellas for shade. That was a first! It is a well thought out plan for people. Walkable. Restaurants were diverse and delicious.
