- From US$308.15 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 938 reviewsOne of the best places we have ever stayed in in Italy. Palazzo Alexander is a beautiful and very friendly place with attention to detail. You could feel that this hotel is family owned. From the moment we entered the door we were met by a both friendly and professional atmosphere. We felt so welcome and cared for all through our four nights stay. Our room was spacious and - very important as Lucca was going through a cold snap - properly insulated and heated; this can sometimes be an issue in hotels in Italy, but not here. The included breakfast was sumptious: Besides a well equipped buffet they brought us freshly cooked eggs and bacon, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee and a selection of local cold cuts straight from the kitchen to our table. One night as we were on our way out for dinner the rain was belting down and we didn't have an umbrella (forget it in Pisa); the friendly receptionist just lent us his - thank you!Guest review byAndersDenmark
- From US$122.08 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.5Very good - What previous guests thought, 496 reviewsWe went here on a whim and we were very pleasantly surprised! Everything was fantastic! Very friendly and generous people. We had a little wine tasting when we arrived with the houses own wines which was very nice and with really tasty wines. The view from the hill is magnificent and the pool is just by the vineyard. The dinner was also excellent and actually authentic Italian where it was possible to have antipasti, primi, secondi and dulce without getting overly full.Guest review byAdamSweden
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 2,141 reviewsIt is located at the very center of Lucca. Although it is a small town, you can get quite close to central regions for foods and shopping, and the central plaza. The wall around the city is close. Room is clean, spacious and traditional. Staffs are so kind and helpful. Most importantly, the breakfast is fresh, authentic, and delicious. The hotel made my stay in Lucca perfect.Guest review byJinhee_JangSouth Korea

Lucca is a beautiful walled city.
Lucca is a beautiful walled city. There's a lot to see if you are interested in history and culture. There are many delightful bars, pasticcerias and osterias. We would particularly recommend Caffe del Teatro for coffee and pastries. The city is small enough that you can walk out of the city into the countryside. An easy route is along the disused aqueduct path. There are also good bus and train services if you wish to go further afield. Pisa and Florence are easy to reach for a day trip. So is Viareggio. We plan to return.Guest review byMalcolmUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The great thing about Altopascio is that it is close enough to be able to do many day trips. Within an hour from Altopascio you can get to Cinque Terre (La Spezia specifically), you can go to Pisa, Florence and even San Gimignano, a beautiful borgo townGuest review byRogerCanada - 10.0

Gorgeous hilltop village with great restaurants and a castle that you can visit with amazing views. We loved the fact that it wasn't too touristy and our trip coincided with the annual wine festival with lots of stalls and live music which we enjoyed.Guest review byEmmaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Great place to stay and a lot of history, arts, and culture to be explored. I didn't expect that it is such a nice and beautiful place. Would recommend to everyone, especially the cafes and tavernas. I had not enough time during my stay to see enough of all the places in Lucca - so will be back - hopefully soon.Guest review byGregorAustria - 8.0

Very peaceful to look at the mountains while enjoying your morning coffee. Leave more time for communting to the property every day from where ever you visit, it is a small, winding road, a tunnell and not fun to do at night or after a glass of wine. I will look to stay closer to Pisa next time.Guest review byKristenUnited States - 8.0

It was quite special to stay in an ancient fortification stemming from the 1400's. The heir to this property gave us good historic background on the property. The unit is reasonable in size and was a comfortable size for 4 people although we were 6. The sleeper couch was not comfortable. The kitchen was very nice but it was not equipped to the standard of a true self catering unit. For the rest everything was just fine and we would advise anybody to come and stay here when visiting the area. The main bedroom bed was nice. The 2nd bedroom only had half walls. The little town is quaint and beautiful and worthwhile visitingGuest review byM GSouth Africa - 10.0

Montecarlo is an excellent village on a hilltop close to Lucca. The village is very lively in the evening, with many restaurants and bars. Unfortunately, like in many other locations where demand exceeds supply, we had some negative experiences with restaurant owners who were rude and not flexible with tourists. Fortunately, those were a few exceptions, while most restaurants were friendly and gentle.Guest review byRiccardoItaly
