FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From US$557.19 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 421 reviewsThe rooms were fairly small but clean, cozy, and extremely comfortable. The spa facilities were excellent, especially the heated indoor-outdoor pool, though the massages were quite average compared to other spa resorts we've visited. The food and wine selection at the resort were outstanding, and the views across the property were truly impressive. I would definitely return if I ever visit that area of Italy again. Also remember to call the resort before booking as some rooms are far from the property and some are inside the property.Guest review byDilsher SinghIndia

There was nothing to dislike but older people like us should wear sensible shoes. Most areas are cobbled but it is part of the history. We were at a wedding 25 mins fro Perugia but lunch outside are hotel was great with wonderful views Easy to get round no buses. We are both 83 so not young and I couldn't see any activities .It was for peole to see what it was like in the 1400's plusGuest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Loved Orvieto.
Loved Orvieto. The cathedral and museums are fantastic and wandering the atmospheric streets is a joy. The underground Orvieto tour is a must, really interesting and a brilliant guide. Lots of lovely restaurants, many in nice squares, lots of wonderful shops with artisan products. We stayed 2 nights giving us 2 full days which was perfect. If you love history, art and architecture and you enjoy good food and wine you will love Orvieto. It is small enough to walk around. If you want a burst of exercise vist St Patrick's well, a deep Etruscan well - didn't count the steps but it certainly got the heart rate going climbing back up. We ate lunch in the Enoteca Al Duomo in Piazza del Duomo the first day, delicious food and wine, charming owner who produces some of the wine served and sold in the Enoteca - highly recommended. On our last day we had a lovely lunch on the panoramic terrace of Trattoria Vinosus in Piazza del Duomo- delicious. Both restaurants in a great location and yet reasonably priced.Guest review bySusanUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A small historic centre on a hillside, with beautiful scenery and cute streets. A great place to sit and watch the world go by. There are a good few interesting historical sites to visit right the the town centre, which is very easy to reach from the train station. It has great places to eat including Osteria del Matto (fixed menu with great freshly cooked, food, but not suitable for vegetarians) and Contrasti Cucina e Ozio, with a high-quality menu and still reasonable prices. La Bottega is wonderful for a glass of wine with quality local salumi, cheese or porchetta. There are really handy underground moving walkways to help you up or down the steep streets and shade you from the hot weather. The bars in the main square offer small aperitivo included in the price of a drink at all times of the day. There is a lot of construction right now(summer 2025) to upgrade older buildings , but I'm sure this will only improve the town.Guest review bySineadItaly - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0

If you're religious and want to see Cascia and St Rita's birthplace nearby then come or if interested in art history and St Rita's basilica and monastery next door. If driving it's a nice way to pass a morning or afternoon. Not much else to keep you there but scenery roundabout is stunning! We took a taxi organized by hotel and spent an hour or two around her birthplace village -magical views and you can climb up hill to mountain top church!Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom
