FAQs about hotels in Umbria
Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- From US$335.10 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 584 reviewsRoom is newly renovated, modern, high tech!! Exactly same as the photos on Booking.com. Most agritourismo villas are old and not renovated. Borgo Antichi Otto Assisi is different! Newly renovate rooms, bathroom with heater, modern high functioning 2 way shower and a bench to sit on, charming gift pouch on arrival (body oil, body balm, cookies etc) that really catch guests’ heart. - Beautiful garden to walk around. - Great location (10 minute walking distance to the town). If you want both “close enough to walk to Assisi town” and “Agritourism in the nature”, this is the perfect location to have them both! We are very selective of accommodation and we give 10/10 to this place. Definitely coming back in the future.Guest review byEMIMalta
- From US$899.49 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 267 reviewsThe staff were superb. We were greeted by Carlos and the team with such a warm welcome. We were able to check-in early and had a complimentary glass of prosecco which was a nice surprise. Throughout orlur stay Carlos and Co. were warm, friendly and helpful. The location is perfect for a stroll into town and the hotel occupies a proud position at the top of the hill. The star of the show here is the spa. A subterranean grotto of luxury unearthed in 2010 and transformed into a breathtaking experiential wellness centre. Included in our stay was an exclusive 2-hour traditional roman spa circuit and it was incredible. Thank you, Carlos and team for making our visit so unforgettable. We will be back!Guest review byKarlUnited Kingdom
- From US$229.08 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,025 reviewsThe property and rooms were stunning! We were welcomed by the owner when we arrived who gave us a full background about the hotel. The views, the restoration of the church and all the rooms were gorgeous. We had a free room upgrade to their best room which was so lovely. We ate at the restaurant the evening we stayed and we’re floored by the quality and taste of the tasting menu and wine. After dinner the owner drove us in the golf buggy up to the spa where we had an hour in the jacuzzi under the stars before the owner came to pick us up an hour later at midnight. Would highly recommend staying here!Guest review byFrancescaUnited Kingdom

There was nothing to dislike but older people like us should wear sensible shoes. Most areas are cobbled but it is part of the history. We were at a wedding 25 mins fro Perugia but lunch outside are hotel was great with wonderful views Easy to get round no buses. We are both 83 so not young and I couldn't see any activities .It was for peole to see what it was like in the 1400's plusGuest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 10.0
It’s a lovely place to wander about in.
It’s a lovely place to wander about in. You come across wonderful little streets and squares at every turning. It was easy for me to get around, but those with mobility issues may find it more difficult. I visited the Pozzo do San Patrizio. It’s an extraordinary structure! The funicular up to the old town from the station takes 2 minutes and is all part of the experience. It was very busy going up, so I did a round trip later on. €1.30 return in an almost empty car.Guest review byAnneUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A small historic centre on a hillside, with beautiful scenery and cute streets. A great place to sit and watch the world go by. There are a good few interesting historical sites to visit right the the town centre, which is very easy to reach from the train station. It has great places to eat including Osteria del Matto (fixed menu with great freshly cooked, food, but not suitable for vegetarians) and Contrasti Cucina e Ozio, with a high-quality menu and still reasonable prices. La Bottega is wonderful for a glass of wine with quality local salumi, cheese or porchetta. There are really handy underground moving walkways to help you up or down the steep streets and shade you from the hot weather. The bars in the main square offer small aperitivo included in the price of a drink at all times of the day. There is a lot of construction right now(summer 2025) to upgrade older buildings , but I'm sure this will only improve the town.Guest review bySineadItaly - 10.0

Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0

If you're religious and want to see Cascia and St Rita's birthplace nearby then come or if interested in art history and St Rita's basilica and monastery next door. If driving it's a nice way to pass a morning or afternoon. Not much else to keep you there but scenery roundabout is stunning! We took a taxi organized by hotel and spent an hour or two around her birthplace village -magical views and you can climb up hill to mountain top church!Guest review byMaryUnited Kingdom
