We were delighted with the showcase of local ceramics and tea, and the welcome tea started us on our little tea journey, the start of a relaxing two days spent here. There was plenty of seating all around the ryokan, to relax, to wait, to medidate, to just stare into nature… A big thank you to all the staff we met, from the station pick up to the small conversations at breakfast. Fukuoka City is compact compared to Tokyo so it's really chill and easy to navigate. There are spaces for children like parks, swan boat rides and easy drives to places like Yanagawa for its canals and local craft, Yame for craft, Kurume for fruit picking and Momochi Beach presents an amazing sunset. Kagoshima in winter - Feb - can be very cold. Food here is great and the Satsuma Japanese wonderful. Black is a lucky color in Kagoshima thus the my son's Rebnise basketball team wears black at home games. Taxis are always available at stations and it is not far from anywhere. A day trip to Ibuski's sand baths is recommended - on fine days. Plenty of public natural mineral water onsens are available. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. Really great seaside town with a large American influence due to the military base in town. The food was great and the night scene lovely as well, though I wish I had more time to visit the Bio Park - will plan to go next time!
