The room was spacious, clean and very comfortable. We were there in the winter, so it was a bit cold, but the heater was provided so it got warm quickly. The most important for us, our dog was welcome ♥️ The location is just perfect for a stop on a road trip on the east coast.

This Chalet is a very cosy, beautiful and made with love holiday home. From the first moment you feel reset. The stunning view over the coastline is breathtaking. Doing the dishes with this view is my new favourite activity. Also, the room was very large and had all the comforts you could even ask for.

We did not have any breakfast as we left very early, but the host was a very charming lady whom we loved instantly. She made our very short stay extremely comfortable.

The weather was hot and sunny most days with the odd sprinkle of rain. Water activities were on the cards with long walks along the beach and into the CBD. We were close enough to everything to plan shopping trips, movies, sightseeing and eating out. For cheap eats - China palace was great with your fave asian treats. For a special meal - Lone star is our pick, great food with a special view and for something different to takeaway - The Hangi Place - Hangi, Fried bread and steamed pud! For a Yum brekkie or Rewena to take home try the Kaiti Bakery. You cant go past an Ice cream at Okitu dairy! Plenty of beaches, great parks & skate parks, an upgraded Kiwa Pools for the kids, you can feed the stingrays at Tatapouri, Enrol your family to learn how to surf or dive with Taiora Surf school and so much more!

The hosts were incredibly busy, but took time to arrange another room for us. This is a very old hotel, with all the maintenance issues that you can expect. There is no meals service, so guests need to bring there own food and drink or get some from the very small village store. Guests can use the full size catering kitchen.

There is limited accommodation in Hicks Bay and we knew the hotels was a bit run down before we went but looks like maybe they are doing it up. Staff nice and friendly and the room was nice and clean.

Te Puia has nothing to offer.

Te Puia has nothing to offer. The only shop in town was closed. The hotel bar was closed, dining room and lounge were closed. No food or drink on offer. The hot springs The town is known for consisted of one tepid pool behind the hotel which was filthy and not even hot. All in all very disappointing stay. The hotel rooms were clean and comfortable, no issue there. And the bathrooms were clean and functional. It's just a sham there was nothing else on offer to make it a stay rather than just a place to sleep

Not a lot to do in Hicks Bay itself, walk to old wharf is interesting. In the area there is the East Cape Lighthouse (lots of steps but worth it), most easterly point of New Zealand. Also Manuka honey/oil shop between Hicks Bay and Te Araroa which has a nice cafe as well as selling their products.

Lovely place to go when the weather is good.

Lovely place to go when the weather is good. A really good selection of beaches to choose from. Restaurant selection is surprisingly good for a mid sized NZ town. Nice saturday farmers market is a real treat and the wineries in the district are the icing on the cake. Great place to go for those who are into surfing and surf related activities.

This was more hostel like accommodation than hotel.

This was more hostel like accommodation than hotel. Small room but clean & tidy apart from very dirty windows -a good clean & repaint required. Bathroom refurbished & great shower but once again windows the same as bedroom. Advertised pools were one pool which unfortunately was so extremely hot you could not get in ! Hotel frontage needed a clean up as did the "foyer" -a very dirty fish tank does nothing for the place

There is really not much to do at Hicks Bay.

There is really not much to do at Hicks Bay. It is a good, mid-point stopping place for a trip around East Cape. The nearby village of Te Araroa was more interesting, but there’s not much to do there either!
