FAQs about hotels in Madeira Islands
The Island of Eternal Spring
With lush landscapes, brightly coloured flowers and a mild, year-round climate, it’s easy to see why Madeira is called the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’. Its interior is mountainous, so most resorts are coastal, many at the foot of steep cliffs.
One such resort is Paul do Mar, a fishing village known for whale watching and surfing, as is Jardim do Mar, on a plateau just east. Nearby Calheta has 2 white sand beaches protected by breakwaters.
The main resort is the capital Funchal. Cascading down slopes, it has the lion’s share of 5-star hotels in Madeira on Booking.com. A cable car ascending into the hills offers fantastic views towards the harbour where cruise liners and ferries from neighbouring Porto Santo island are berthed.
East, Caniço’s sandy beach is nestled between rocky cliffs, while Santa Cruz is the nearest resort to Madeira Airport. Machico is the 2nd biggest city and has the best nightlife outside Funchal, but the best Madeira hotels for families are in quieter resorts such as Porto da Cruz in the north.
Santana is home to the triangular-shaped, thatched houses typical of the island, and twisting mountain roads lead to São Vicente, an attractive hill town with red-roofed houses. By the north-western tip is the village of Porto Moniz whose offshore rocks shelter natural rock pools.

The hotel surrounding is beautiful with stunning views, you can watch the sunrise from the balcony or just outside the hotel. Great breakfast with huge choice of food. We had a vila which was very spacious and well equipped, even with an own fireplace :) The staff was super friendly. There is also a walking path that will bring you down to the beach, which is not far, just it is little steep. Definitely recommend for families with kids - they can enjoy the pool area as well as playing room with billiard, table tennis and table football.Guest review byMichalSlovakia

Our first visit to Madeira and our 10 night stay in Funchal...
Our first visit to Madeira and our 10 night stay in Funchal was excellent. It exceeded our high expectations. The West and East full-day bus tours of the island were excellent, as was the 3 hour trip on the Santa Maria de Colombo, a replica Christopher Columbus sailing ship. The other sights we thoroughly enjoyed included the Monte Palace via cable car, Botanical Garden, Cathedral and Bell Tower, the historic area of Funchal and slightly further away, Camara de Lobos.Guest review byStuart CUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We were only staying in Caniço, we went there to visit Madeira and really enjoyed it. It's green and beautiful, people are very nice and food is excellent. I would definitely recommend renting a car with a powerful engine as the island has lots of steep roads.Guest review byCristinaUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Beautiful beach, nice nature.
Beautiful beach, nice nature. The restaurants are rather expensive. Some of it might be due to extra costs of water and electricity. Still, the normal restaurant at Porto Santo is as expensive as a top restaurant in Lisboa. And no, quality of food is not the same. Best value for money was Mar e Sol. Other than that, I would come back.Guest review byPedroAustria - 8.0

We come here to enjoy the natural pools we were too tired upon arrival. But next morning was perfect, no crowds, peaceful. There are enough restaurants to choose from. Please be aware that some of them close their kitchens around 4pmGuest review byUrsulaUnited States - 8.0
Machico resort is not for the night clubbing holiday maker,...
Machico resort is not for the night clubbing holiday maker, It was however for us a slow paced setting with a good selection of restaurants and supermarkets with walking routes for those who wish. The harbour offered boat trips, whale watching and surf lessons, the latter was enjoyed from the safety of a dry vantage point. Local bus into Funchal for 2-60 euro single was 50 mins away which opens up further opportunities for excursions and sight seeing like the red or yellow hop on hop off bus tours which operate from the promenade where the ticket is valid for 24 hours allowing to to spend time where the mood takes. Weather forecasting in resort will not take into account the drizzle from the mountains with can add a cooling break from the sunshine and occasional rain. Enjoy.Guest review bySteveUnited Kingdom - 10.0

If you are going to stay here, be sure to have a car so that you can explore the island. The Fish Factory is a wonderful restaurant a short walk from the property and the local bakery is highly recommended too.Guest review byJoUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast.
Santana is a perfect location to explore the north coast. Not far away from airport and capital, but still on the north. Two hiking starting points are nearby: Queimadas and Achada do Teixeira. Santana also has an only large supermarket on the whole north coast, so you can buy delicious food right there. No such option in Porto Moniz or Seixal.Guest review bySergeyNorway - 10.0

This location is simply out-of-this-world beautiful. I did a lot of driving around Madeira, 700km in a week, so I saw a lot of places. Sao Vicente is lush, green, mountainous and breathtaking. I'm definitely glad we stayed here.Guest review byJodieUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Ponta do Sol is a gem for exploring Madeira's levadas,...
Ponta do Sol is a gem for exploring Madeira's levadas, offering both relaxation and adventure. The scenic Levada do Moinho/Nova is located in Ponta do Sol itself, and varied trails nearby cater to all fitness levels, from challenging Rabaçal hikes to leisurely Levada dos Cedros strolls. Ponta do Sol's tranquil atmosphere, lovely beach, restaurants, and relaxed pace allow for post-hike relaxation. The sunny climate enhances levada walks, and the town provides ample hotels, amenities, and tour operators. For a Madeira levada trip, Ponta do Sol's location, trails, atmosphere, and climate make it an ideal base.Guest review byZdenek KlofacCzech Republic
