The staff were exceptionally helpful especially for me as an English speaker. They went above and beyond to help me get cabs and navigate the city. The rooftop restaurant has a really nice vibe and the food is good and reasonably priced. My room was clean with great air conditioning. The room was fully enclosed, so no bugs and the hot water was great. Breakfast included with the price of the room was good with a fair amount of food options. I felt safe and wasn't concerned about my belongings when I left. They have a beautiful courtyard in the centre of the building and I woke up to the most beautiful sounds of birds singing in the trees. My only disappointment was that I couldn't stay at casa mara for my whole trip as they were fully booked. Just a note that they do not accept credit card for payment. They like to receive payment in XOF. If you have a busy work schedule, it is better to change your money at the airport before arriving to the hotel if you won't have extra time (the rates were comparable to on the street). I have travelled a lot to many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, etc. Dakar/Senegal is one of my favorite places to visit. I love the ambiance of the people. We initially didn't consider spending the night in Goree but...
We initially didn't consider spending the night in Goree but were convinced by people in Dakar and so happy with our choice. It's great to see how the atmosphere on the island changes once all toruists are gone. We had a great meal by the seaside (excellent fresh seafood) and enjoyed the calm and tranquillity of the island. Location was good.
Location was good. Aircon only in bedrooms, too hot when you get to the Residence. Rooms are nice and cool. Linen needs major upgrade. Bathrooms need mats and towels and they need basic cleaning to make sure they're hygenic. If you're on a shoe string budget and don't mind aesthetics then the residence can work, for me anything over 1 night would have been an overkill. Dakar is a very beautiful city surrounded by the ocean. There are so many places to visit; the islands, the monument, the beaches, the fast foods, etc. As a solo traveler, I was scared at first of the risk I took to visit these places alone, but I quickly realized how friendly the people of Dakar are. Goree Island is a trip most people make for just a day from Dakar. However 1 or 2 nights is even more special. The journey takes 20 minutes on the ferry and is an easy journey. Remember your passport to get on the ferry. The island is tiny, in 30 minutes you can walk all of it. It’s very picturesque. The main place to visit it tinged with terrible historical sadness. The House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves) tells the history of millions of slaves who were kidnapped from West Africa for the Americas. Beautiful city, lots of new development. Very expensive for entertainment, eating and drinking out. People are friendly, warm and welcoming. I visited Goree Island, great experience. Small island with lots of history, old and well kept houses and a small community that probably completely depends on tourism. Wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle from Dakar. Food is local and mainly at the beach and closes early. Try other guesthouses such as adame on the other side of the island, which has sea view, airco and is treat for families and bigger groups.getting around by walking is easy and nice to explore the island. Either way. The only other vehicle is donkeys (mainly used for heavy loads and garbage). One night is perfect. Two nights is very relaxing. 3 is a bit much.Guest review byDeirdreNetherlands
